Prior to the conflicts Ghazni had one of five provincial museums. It was opened in 1966 within the Sultan Abdul Razaq Mausoleum complex and contained numerous marble carvings, some of animals, ceramic tiles and bronzes from the region, as well as pieces from the Ghaznavid Empire (977-1186). The uprising in the provinces forced the Soviet regime to transfer some of the objects to Kabul. Rumours persist that part of the collection is hidden and will be installed in the new museum when peace is restored. A mosaic-covered irrigation canal running under the museum which may once have functioned as a cooling system was damaged and must be repaired or re-routed before the museum can be completely opened.
