Located some 60 kilometres west of Kandahar, Mundigak (c 3000-2000 BCE) was originally excavated by the Délégation archéologique Française en Afghanistan (DAFA) from 1951 to 1958. The collection of artifacts unearthed here included terracotta and stone figures, tools and jewellery, which placed were on display at the National Museum in Kabul. The Talibans’ destruction of any sculptures depicting live creatures left the collection poorer, but until a complete inventory is done it is not known how many pieces from this site were saved.
