Founded in 1931, Kabul University is the country's most important institute of higher education. The University was the best known in the region in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2002 it had 8,000 students and 4,000 teachers and staff. The University needs equipment and staff training in order to fulfil its obligation to its students.
