UNESCO Afghanistan seeks to safeguard all aspects of Afghanistan's cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, including museums, monuments, archaeological sites, music, art and traditional crafts, as well as offering assistance to libraries (National Library, public libraries, school libraries, university libraries, etc) and archives (National Archives, regional archives, communal archives, archives of public administrations, etc). In the media sector it played a key role in re-launching Kabul Weekly, the first independent publication to appear in the country after the fall of the Taliban. It has also provided training to journalists and technical media staff, run projects for the development of public service broadcasting - including the establishment of a regulatory framework and support for TV productions and co-productions - and is currently helping to establish an independent printing plant and distribution network with a view to seeking to furthering the development of independent print media. UNESCO is also managing a project to create community multimedia centres with a view to providing access to information needed for development projects and distance learning facilities.
