Stavanger Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1938. It consists of a total number of 75 musicians, but is frequently enlarged to meet the demands of its romantic repertoire. The Orchestra holds its concerts in Stavanger Concert Hall. The Orchestra has released several recordings with music of Harald Sæverud and Geir Tveitt, published by the high profile Swedish record label BIS.
The two conductors Steven Sloane and Fabio Biondi form the artistic leadership of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. Steven Sloane took up his position as Chief Conductor from the 2007/2008 season, while Fabio Biondi started his engagement as Artistic director of Early Music in August 2006.
NB - In 2011 the city of Stavanger will be enriched with a new concert hall. This will contain two auditoria, one mainly for the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and one multi-purpose hall for all types of music performance. Construction will start in 2008, the culmination of a long process which has included, in 2003, an international architect competition, the political process of financing the over 1 billion NOK required, and the detailed planning of all the facilities both inside and out. The Oslo-based company Medplan AS Arkitekter won the competition and is now working intensively on this vast project.
