OVERVIEW
Excellence in the Slovene cultural sector is rewarded in a number of different ways, ranging from arts competitions to awards and honourable titles. The section is under construction.
In recent years international awards have been won by several Slovene artists.
Drago Jancar (1)In December 2005 the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art was conferred on Drago Jančar for his achievements in the field of literature and for promoting Austrian-Slovene ties. Jančar, born in 1948 in Maribor, is a widely-translated fiction writer, playwright and essayist. He has received a number of literary and arts awards in Slovenia and abroad, including the Prešeren Award for literature, three Grum Awards for drama, three Rožanc Awards for essays, two Kresnik Awards for novels, and the European Award for short prose. Jančar has moreover made it to the big screen, as his novel Zvenenje v glavi ('Headnoise'), a portrayal of a prison uprising, was brought to the cinemas by Slovene director Andrej Košak in 2002 (see Novi val - New Wave Košak). His novel 'Northern Lights', a major literary work about Maribor, was staged by the Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Maribor in its 2005-6 season. His novels 'Northern Lights' and 'Mocking Desire' have also been published in English.
Bernarda FinkIn February 2006 mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink received the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art in Vienna. The singer, who was born in Buenos Aires of Slovene parents, studied solo singing at the renowned Higher Institute for Art in Buenos Aires, Teatro Colon. She has performed with many famous orchestras including the Vienna, Berlin and London Philharmonic, and under many leading conductors such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Valery Gergyev, Sir Colin Davis, Hans Graf and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Her repertoire spans works from the old masters to those of contemporary composers. In 2002 she received the Prešeren Fund Award for her solo part in Bach's Christmas Oratory in Ljubljana and for her series of Isaac Posch concerts in the Early Music Festival in Brezice. Fink currently lives in the southern Austrian province of Carinthia.
