The performance of Les Sangles. Ana Desetnica Festival 2005The Ana Desetnica International Street Theatre Festival is organised by the Ana Monró Theatre and has taken place every year since 1998. It is held at the beginning of Summer in Ljubljana and then in Maribor, with individual programmes also being transferred to Kranj, Nova Gorica, Novo mesto, Kamnik, Grosuplje and Šoštanj. The programme seeks to present various genres, styles, forms and contents of street theatre art, and includes everything from small individual acts to large-scale performances, from programmes for children to provocative shows for adults, from pantomime to illusions, from street music to contemporary dance, from visual acts to narratives, from drama to humour and from circus skills to pyrotechnics – indeed, it is devised to appeal to a wide range of audience groups. The festival has grown bigger and more successful from year to year. The festival’s popularity among the people of Ljubljana has also grown steadily, and in 2007 around 80 events and shows in four days were seen by some 34,000 spectators.
The 2006 Festival was held in the old city centre and encouraged informal gatherings of diverse audiences and artists. The programme hosted several domestic and foreign street theatre groups and artists, giving 80 performances at various venues. The first major performance was on Miklošičeva Street, where the French group Delit de facade presented their puppet show Autrement dit ('Put Another Way'). A special feature was the Playground (aimed at adults) and Culture Fair that introduced the different cultural societies, groups and individuals which contributed to the multicultural face of Ljubljana, with dance, music, literature, culinary delights, and took place at Šuštarski most (Cobbler's Bridge). Ana Desetnica was also featured in the Lent Festival in Maribor, and visited other towns in Slovenia. In 2007 the Festival took place at several venues (Argentina Square, Valvasor Square and Kodeljevo Park) in Ljubljana, and the main attraction was the French Group Cie les passagers. The MachinA programme presented a selection of the youngest Slovene street theatre groups, while the Fair of Cultures in front of the Modern galerija presented a multicultural production.
