The key arm of provincial government in this north-west mountain province, which has a total area of 14,468 square kilometres and a population of just under 900,000 people (1999), principally Thái but also including Kinh (Việt), H'mông, Mường, Dao, Khơ-mú and Lào. In addition to the provincial capital Sơn La Province incorporates nine rural districts (huyện): Mường La, Quỳnh Nhai, Thuận Châu, Sông Mã, Mai Sơn, Bắc Yên, Yên Châu, Phù Yên and Mộc Châu.
