The key arm of provincial government in this Red River Delta province, which has a total area of 1,495 square kilometres and a population of just under 1.8 million people (1999), mainly of Kinh (Việt) ethnicity. In addition to the provincial capital Thái Bình town, Thái Bình Province incorporates seven rural districts (huyện): Vũ Thư, Đông Hưng, Kiến Xương, Tiền Hải, Thái Thụy, Quỳnh Phụ and Hưng Hà.
