The key arm of provincial government in this northern mountain province, which has a total area of 5,800 square kilometres and a population of just under 680,000 people (1999), principally Kinh (Việt), but also including Tày, Dao, Cao Lan, Nùng, H'mông, Hoa (Chinese) and Sán Dìu. In addition to the provincial capital Tuyên Quang town, Tuyên Quang Province incorporates five rural districts (huyện): Sơn Dương, Yên Sơn, Hàm Yên, Chiêm Hóa and Na Hang.
