The key arm of provincial government in this northern mountain province, which has a total area of 6,625 square kilometres and a population of around 680,000 people (1999), principally Kinh (Việt), but also including Tày, Dao, Hmông and Thái. In addition to the provincial capital Yên Bái City, Yên Bái Province incorporates Nghĩa Lộ town and seven rural districts (huyện): Trấn Yên, Văn Chấn, Yên Bình, Văn Yên, Lục Yên, Trạm Tấu and Mù Căng Chải.
