In 968, after bringing to an end a long-standing civil conflict, Đinh Bộ Lĩnh declared himself king, taking the name Đinh Tiên Hoàng and renaming his reunified country as Đại Cồ Việt. He established his capital at Hoa Lư, 13 kilometres from Ninh Bình. The citadel and royal palaces of the Đinh (968-980) and Anterior Lê (980-1009) kings have long since disappeared, but visitors can still view 17th-century reconstructions of the 11th-century dynastic temples dedicated to Kings Đinh Tiên Hoàng and Lê Đại Hành. After viewing the temples, visitors may take a boat trip through beautiful valleys surrounded by wooded karst limestone hills. Every year in the third month of the lunar calendar pilgrims flock to the site to attend the Trường Yên Festival:
