Established in 1993 and run by the Việt Nam Academy of Social Sciences, the Centre undertakes research on Japanese history, economy, politics, society, culture and language in order to provide the government with the scientific foundation for making domestic and foreign policies and to provide the Vietnamese people with a better knowledge of Japan. Since 1998 the Centre has also conducted research on South Korea.
