The Institute of Ethnology was founded in 1968. Its responsibilities include: carrying out research into all aspects of the lives of the ethnic minorities; training PhD researchers to undertake research work with the ethnic minorities as well as teaching foreign students enrolled in such institutions as the Hà Nội Social Sciences and Humanities University, the Institute of South East Asia Studies, the Centre for Women’s and Family Studies and the Institute of Social Sciences in Hồ Chí Minh City and working with ethnic minority and upland issues; and developing international relations with academic institutions, universities, NGOs and individuals interested in working with ethnic groups. The Institute sponsors conferences, workshops and training programmes with international agencies and ethnic minority groups.
