 Originally established in 1979 as the Department of Folklore Studies, the Institute is charged with conducting fundamental research on culture and co-ordinating cultural studies all over the country. It carries out both theoretical and applied research projects on Vietnamese culture, with a focus on folkloric and ethnic cultural studies; conducts surveys and collects data of representative phenomena in culture; co-ordinates its activities with those of related organisations at national and provincial level in surveying and preserving the cultural heritage of the country; and organises programmes of international scholarly exchange and scientific co-operation. The Institute issues various publications including the quarterly Văn hóa Dân gian (Folk Culture) Magazine:
