Established in 1959, the Institute of Literature conducts research to collect, summarise and evaluate the Vietnamese literary heritage, including traditional and contemporary, oral and written literature. At the same time it studies world literature with a view to enriching the national literature with the best selected from overseas work. The Institute is charged with organising and conducting research on different writers, different literary works, tendencies and periods, interpreting important theoretical and practical issues, collecting literature materials, evaluating the scientific preciseness and value of material for research and compiling large collections of literary works and literary histories.
