The Institute of Social Sciences, Southern Region was established in 1975. Its principal functions are to conduct research, train researchers at postgraduate level, exchange scientific information, establish international scientific collaboration and disseminate knowledge of the social sciences and humanities. It comprises Research Centres on Philosophical Studies, Historical Studies, Ethnological and Religious Studies, Archaeological Studies, South East Asian Studies, Literary Studies, Linguistic Studies, Sociological and Development Studies, Economic and Development Studies, Family and Women’s Studies and Hán-Nôm Studies. The Institute manages a Library and also publishes the Khoa học Xã hội (Social Sciences) Magazine:
