The key arm of provincial government in this north east mountain province, which has a total area of 4,796 square kilometres and a population of around 275,000 people (1999), principally Kinh (Việt) but also including Tày, Nùng, Dao, H'mông and Sán Dìu ethnic minorities. In addition to the provincial capital Bắc Cạn town, Bắc Cạn Province incorporates six rural districts (huyện): Bạch Thông, Chợ Đồn, Ba Bể, Ngân Sơn, Na Rì and Chợ Mới.
