The key arm of provincial government in this Red River Delta province, which has a total area of 3,817 square kilometres and a population of just under 1.5 million people (1999), principally Kinh (Việt) but also including Nùng, Tày, Cao Lan-Sán Chỉ, Sán Dìu, Dao and Hoa (Chinese) ethnic minorities. In addition to the provincial capital Bắc Giang town, Bắc Giang Province incorporates nine rural districts (huyện): Việt Yên, Yên Dũng, Lạng Giang, Tân Yên, Hiệp Hòa, Yên Thế, Lục Nam, Lục Ngạn and Sơn Động.
