The key arm of provincial government in this Red River Delta province, which has a total area of 797 square kilometres and a population of just over 940,000 people (1999), mostly of Kinh (Việt) ethnicity. In addition to the provincial capital Bắc Ninh town, Bắc Ninh Province incorporates seven rural districts (huyện): Yên Phong, Quế Võ, Tiên Du, Thuận Thành, Gia Bình, Từ Sơn and Lương Tài.
