 The Institute of History Library comprises some 70,000 books which originated from the former library of the École Française d’extrême-orient (EFEO) after the latter closed in 1957, including some 4,000 works in chữ Hán (classical Han Chinese, also known as chữ nho) and the ideographic script known as chữ nôm which was devised for transcribing spoken Vietnamese.
