The library of the Institute of Hán-Nôm Studies holds an important collection of Nguyễn dynasty court documents in chữ Hán (classical Han Chinese, also known as chữ nho) and the ideographic script devised for transcribing spoken Vietnamese known as chữ nôm. A large number of the manuscripts, printed texts and rubbings of stelae in this collection formed part of the former library of the École Française d’extrême-orient (EFEO) prior to its closure in 1957. The Library incorporates a centre for the restoration and conservation of books and old documents.
