Located some 145 kilometres north west of the provincial capital Vinh, Quỳ Châu Culture and Ethnology Museum was opened in 1976 in a Thái ethic minority-style house. It displays photographs, costumes and cultural artefacts relating to the ethnic minorities living in the north west of Nghệ An Province, documents and artefacts concerning the resistance war against French and American invaders and exhibits on the life of three mountainous districts: Quỳ Châu, Quế Phong and Quỳ Hợp (formerly Phủ Quỳ). The Museum also fulfils a political role, maintaining an archive of exhibits and documents for use by local cadres. The museum currently preserves 373 objects, including 41 scientific, 10 made of porcelain, pottery and glass, 43 made of clay, stone and ore, 83 made of paper, 46 made of cloth, 57 made of wood, 71 made of metal, six made of bone, horn and leather and 16 others. It also contains 865 photos and 23 rolls of more than 2,000 films. In the near future the Museum will be upgraded to become a Provincial Museum of Ethnology. |
