In November 2003 the northern mountainous province of was divided into two provinces, one retaining the old name and the other being given the new name Điện Biên Province. The new Lai Châu Province has a territory of over 906,512 hectares of land and a population of over 313,500, principally Thái and H'mông, but also including Kinh (Việt), Dao, Khơ-mú, Hà Nhì, La Hủ, Mảng and Xinh-mun. The province comprises the provincial capital of Phong Thổ, plus the rural districts (huyện) of Sin Hồ, Mường Tè, Phong Thổ, Tam Đường and part of Mường Lay.
