Tiếng hát Quê hương was formed in 1981 by Phạm Thúy Hoan, a professor from Hồ Chí Minh City Conservatory of Music. Organised as a club, its mission is to preserve, develop and promote Vietnamese traditional music amongst traditional music lovers and also to build a bridge between old and new artists. To fulfil its purpose, Tiếng hát Quê hương participates in such activities as performing traditional songs, dances and music, broadcasting traditional music shows on Vietnamese TV and radio stations, introducing folk songs and traditional musical instruments to schools and universities, opening classes for đàn tranh (16-stringed zither), đàn bầu (monochord), đàn nguyệt (moon-shaped lute), đàn nhị (the 2-stringed fiddle) and sáo trúc (bamboo flute) and organising folk song classes every Sunday morning at the Labour Culture Palace, Hồ Chí Minh City.
