The Đống Đa Festival is held every year immediately after Lunar New Year at Đống Quang Pagoda in Hà Nội's Đống Đa District to celebrate the victory here in 1789 of King Quang Trung (1788-1792) over a 200,000-strong invading Qing army and honour those who died in the battle. Launched with a religious ceremony to commemorate the victory, the festival involves a range of time-honoured games, including wrestling, cock fighting and a traditional swing. A special feature of the festival is the Fire Dragon Dance, performed by a team of young men wearing a 15 metre-long dragon made of paper within circles of fire and accompanied by displays of martial arts. In recent years the festival has involved full-scale dramatic reconstructions of the historic victory over the Chinese, involving a cast of local people directed by Dr Phạm Thị Thành.
