The Hồ Chí Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Việt Nam National University, Hồ Chí Minh City finds its origins in the University of Letters of the Sài Gòn Institute (Trường đại học Văn khoa, thuộc Viện Đại học Sài Gòn), set up in 1955. After Reunification in 1977 this institution amalgamated with the Hồ Chí Minh City Science University (Trường Đại học Khoa học Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh) to become the Hồ Chí Minh City General University (Trường Đại học Tổng hợp Thành Phố Hồ Chí Minh), at that time the largest and most important tertiary training centre in the south of Việt Nam. More recently, following the national restructuring of universities throughout the country, in 1996 the latter institution became the Hồ Chí Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, a constituent training institution of the Việt Nam National University, Hồ Chí Minh City. Hồ Chí Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities has 39 faculties, centres and constituent organisations. Its new main building was opened in 2006.
