Held annually after Tết, Cổ Loa Festival focuses on the legend of Anh Dương King of Âu Lạc and his daughter Mỹ Châu, who told the secret of her father's magic crossbow (given to him by a golden tortoise) to her husband Trọng Thủy, son of rebel Chinese general Triệu Đà and thereby unwittingly enabled Triệu Đà to conquer Cổ Loa in 208 BCE. When he learned of the reason for his defeat, King Anh Dương is said to have killed his daughter and then committed suicide. The festival commences on the 6th day after Tết with a procession of notables from surrounding villages to the King Anh Dương Temple where a miniature royal court containing an incense burner, a stone tablet and a funeral oration is placed in front of the two altars; a ceremony then takes place in the king's honour, accompanied by traditional music. The procession then continues to the Trọng Thủy well and back to the various hamlets, accompanied by firecrackers. The festival continues until the 15th day of the first lunar month, with evening fireworks displays, traditional games such as cock fighting, chess, tug of war, wrestling, swing, rope climbing, martial arts, flag dancing and archery and performances of ca trù, chèo and tuồng.
