The Sóc Sơn Festival is held every year immediately after Lunar New Year at Sóc Sơn temple in honour of legendary local hero Phù Đổng Thiên Vương who, after vanquishing an army of foreign invaders, rode to the top of Sóc mountain and disappeared into the sky with his horse. The festival begins with a temple cleansing ceremony and various processions involving bamboo flowers, elephants and betel plants, a paper boat ritual and a ceremony re-enacting the beheading of the enemy commander.
