Located in Xam Mứn village, just one kilometre south along National Road 279 from the Hoàng Công Chất Citadel at Bản Phủ, are the remnants of the outer walls of the earlier ‘Citadel of the Thirty Thousand’ (Thành tam vạn), which was constructed during the fifteenth century by the Lừ lords of Mường Thanh and acquired its name because - according to the Hưng Hóa Ký Lược (An Abridged History of Hưng Hóa, an ancient province corresponding to modern Yên Bái and Lào Cai Provinces) - it was capable of sheltering 30,000 people and was served by 30,000 water-driven rice pestles.
