While all that now remains of the former citadel are its three gates, it is still possible to trace the outline of this important six-sided Nguyễn-dynasty structure, within which are now located the Xô Viết Nghệ Tĩnh Museum, the Nghệ An Provincial Museum, an open-air theatre and various leisure and exhibition spaces.
