![]() Thầy (Thiên Phúc) Pagoda is located at the foot of Sài Sơn Mountain in Quốc Oai District of Hà Tây province, some 30 kilometres south west of Hà Nội and just six kilometers from the Tây Phương Pagoda. The pagoda was originally built in the 11th century during the reign of King Lý Nhân Tông (1072-1128) and run initially by Buddhist master Từ Ðạo Hạnh, whose birthday on the 7th of the third lunar month is marked by the annual Thầy Pagoda Festival. Built according to the shape of the Chinese character 三 (three), the pagoda comprises three parallel sections - Hạ pagoda (a place for offerings and ceremonies), Trung pagoda (a place for worship of Buddha), and Thượng pagoda (today a place for worship of Từ Ðạo Hạnh). Close to the pagoda is Long Trì pond, where water puppet performances are held in front of the Thuỷ Ðình Temple during the annual festival. The traditional covered Nhật Tiên and Nguyệt Tiên bridges, built by Phùng Khắc Khoan in 1602, are located either side of the stage.
