The key arm of provincial government in this Tây Nguyên highland province, which has a total area of 16,060 square kilometres and a population of over 970,000 people (1999), principally Kinh (Việt) but also including Gia-rai and Ba-na ethnicities. In addition to the provincial capital Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province incorporates 11 rural districts (huyện): Chứ Pah, Ya Grai, Đức Cơ, Chư Prông, Chư Sê, Mang Yang, K’Bang, An Khê, Kông Chrô, A Yun Pa and Krông Pa.
