The key arm of provincial government in this north west mountain province, which has a total area of 4,697 square kilometres and a population of around 757,000 people (1999), principally Mường, but also including Kinh (Việt), Thái, Dao and H'mông. In addition to the provincial capital Hòa Bình town, Hòa Bình Province incorporates nine rural districts (huyện): Kỳ Sơn, Đà Bắc, Mai Châu, Tân Lạc, Lương Sơn, Kim Bôi, Lạc Sơn, Lạc Thủy and Yên Thủy.
