Opened in 1993 and moved to a new central location in 2004, Mai Gallery was the first non-government gallery in Hà Nội and is stil one of the most important contemporary Vietnamese art galleries in Việt Nam. Owner Mai's interest in art was sparked by her father Dương Tường, one of the country's leading writers and critics, who himself gathered an extensive art collection and encouraged the development of art groups such as the Gang of Five. It was thus a natural progression to remodel their small home to create the gallery which in 2003 celebrated its 10th anniversary. Mai favours less commercially-orientated art, relishing her role in fostering emerging talents whose styles are intrinsically Vietnamese. To this end she travels all over the country, personally selecting works for exhibition. Mai Gallery recently extended its exhibition space by forging links with Hà Nội's English bookshop Bookworm, supplying all the works and curating the art space. Plans are currently in hand to open a second gallery in Hồ Chí Minh City, specialising in propaganda art. Leading artists represented at Mai Gallery include Bùi Xuân Phái, Nguyễn Từ Nghiêm, Trần Lưu Hậu, Lưu Công Nhân, Nguyễn Quân, Đặng Xuân Hòa, Hồng Việt Dũng, Bửu Chỉ, Hoàng Đăng Nhuận, Việt Hải, Đỗ Thị Ninh, Đỗ Sơn, Hà Tri Hiếu, Phạm Quang Vinh, Trần Lương and Trần Trọng Vũ.
