The key arm of provincial government in this north-east mountain province, which has a total area of 8,187 square kilometres and a population of just over 700,000 people (1999), principally Nùng but also including other ethnicities such as Kinh (Việt), Dao, Sán Chỉ, Cao Lan and Hoa (Chinese). In addition to the provincial capital Lạng Sơn city, Lạng Sơn Province incorporates 10 rural districts (huyện): Cáo Lộc, Văn Lăng, Văn Quan, Chi Lăng, Lộc Bình, Đình Lập, Hữu Lũng, Bắc Sơn, Bình Gia and Tràng Định.
