The key arm of provincial government in this northern mountain province, which has a total area of 7,500 square kilometres and a population of just under 600,000 people (1999), principally Kinh (Việt), but also including many other ethnicities such as Dao, H'mông, Giấy, Phù Lá, Bố Y and La Chí. In addition to the provincial capital Lào Cai town, Lào Cai Province incorporates Cam Đường town and eight rural districts (huyện): Bảo Thắng, Sa Pa, Bát Xát, Mường Khương, Bắc Hà, Bảo Yên, Văn Bàn and Than Uyên.
