The key arm of provincial government in this north eastern province, which has a total area of 3,465 square kilometres and a population of just under 1.3 million people (1999), principally Kinh (Việt), but also including Mường and Dao. In addition to the provincial capital Việt Trì City, Phú Thọ Province incorporates Phú Thọ town and 10 rural districts (huyện): Lâm Thao, Thanh Ba, Sông Thao, Tam Nông, Thanh Sơn, Yên Lập, Hạ Hòa, Đoan Hùng, Phù Ninh and Thanh Thủy.
