VTV 3 (1)Established on 7 September 1970, Việt Nam Television was subsequently forced to evacuate its equipment to the countryside, whence it broadcast intermittently until the end of the US bombing campaign. It currently broadcasts on five channels: VTV 1 focuses on political and national culture, VTV 2 covers science, technology and education, and VTV 3 is focused on entertainment. Launched in 2000, the international channel VTV 4 offers the best of local programming from all three domestic channels to Vietnamese audiences overseas. A fifth channel, MMDS, broadcasts local and dubbed international feature films during the daytime and in the evenings. VTV’s regional broadcasting centres are located at Hồ Chí Minh City, Huế, Nha Trang, Cần Thơ, Vinh and Tam Đảo. In addition, every province of Việt Nam has its own local television stations, as well as stations to relay VTV’s programmes. Following a major national broadcasting development programme in the late 1990s, transmitters have now been established in most outlying areas of the country. In 2003 it was reported that more than 80 per cent of all urban households owned a television set, and whilst in the countryside this percentage is estimated to be considerably less, even the most remote village cafes are nowadays equipped with TVs and video players. Since 2001 VTV has broadcast weekly programmes of 30 minutes each in the H’mông, Dao, Ê-đê, M’nông, Gia-rai, Xơ đăng, Cơ-ho, Ra-glai, Chăm, Xtiêng and Khmer languages in regions with sizeable ethnic minority populations. VTV owns the cable TV company Việt Nam Cable Television (VCTC) which now has over 30,000 subscribers. It also runs the Việt Nam Television Film Studio, the Secondary School of Television Broadcasting, Thường Tín and the Việt Nam Television Training Centre and publishes the weekly Truyền hình (Television) Magazine.
