The national Voice of Việt Nam (VOV) radio station was established during the August 1945 Revolution under a directive from late President Hồ Chí Minh. The first radio broadcast was the Declaration of Independence read by the President at Bà Định Square on 2 September 1945; the first programme was broadcast five days later in English, French and Chinese. VOV is assigned the task of managing the radio broadcasting system throughout Việt Nam. Its overall objective is to provide high-quality programming for its listeners, using the latest technology. By the year 2000 its programmes had reached more than 80 per cent of all households throughout the country. Since 1 July 1994 VOV has been broadcast on five channels for domestic listeners and one channel to overseas audiences in 12 different languages. VOV's Headquarters building at 58 Quán Sứ incorporates a large recording studio where music programmes and radio soap operas are recorded. However, all of VOV's radio programmes are broadcast from the new VOV Sound Centre (Trung tâm Âm thanh) at 45 Bà Triệu. VOV oversees the activities of 53 local radio stations throughout the country. It publishes the weekly VOVNews Newspaper and runs two broadcasting training colleges and an in-service training centre for radio technicians, operators, producers and reporters.
