Visiting Arts purpose is to strengthen intercultural understanding through the arts. Visiting Arts provides information and intelligence in order to strengthen intercultural dialogue; and creates opportunities to experience intercultural exploration through performances, exhibitions, and by initiating and promoting collaborations. Visiting Arts also expands the skills and knowledge of existing cultural players and develops new talent to ensure a wide, diverse and sustainable group of players. It is the creator of the Cultural Profiles project.
Its work links England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with countries overseas. Visiting Arts was formed in 1977 as a joint venture of the Arts Council of Great Britain,
Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the
British Council, and the
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In April 2001 it became a registered charity independent of the British Council. Visiting Arts is currently funded by
British Council,
Arts Council England, the
Scottish Arts Council, the
Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the
Arts Council of Wales, and the
Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Chairman of Visiting Arts is Gordon Conway.
