Cambodian filmmaking efforts began in the 1950s, but were disrupted by the war years. In recent times indigenous efforts have struggled to compete with imported video and television programmes. However there are unmistakable signs that the Cambodian film industry is in the midst of a revival. New production companies are springing up, more films are being produced, and nearly a dozen movie theatres are now open for business in Phnom Penh.
