Standing in a row opposite and parallel to the Terrace of the Elephants at the heart of Angkor Thom, these 12 largely identical towers were constructed during the reign of Indravarman II (1200-1243). Their purpose remains a mystery - Zhou Daguan, a Chinese emissary who visited Angkor between 1296 and 1297, implies that they posessed some supernatural powers to resolve legal disputes, while the name Suor Prasat given to them later by the Khmers implies that they were simply used as a means of attaching tightropes for circus performers entertaining the royal family in the royal palace opposite. At the time of writing all 12 towers are undergoing extensive renovation by the Japanese Government Team for Safeguarding Angkor (JSA).
