The Khmer Literature Festival was launched in 1995 by the Khmer Writers’ Association with the aim of furthering the development of the art of writing, particularly amongst the younger generation. In odd numbered years the Preah Sihanouk Prize was awarded for excellence at the festival through support from the Royal Palace, and in even-numbered years the 7 January Prize was awarded for excellence through support from the Prime Minister. Unfortunately both the Festival and the two awards have been in abeyance since 2000 due to lack of funds.
