At the present time no training courses in publishing, printing or distribution are available in Laos, although the State Publishing and Book Distribution House occasionally organises basic field study for members of the publishing profession from the provinces, covering both publishing, printing and distribution management and print technology.

During the 1970s and 1980s a small number of scholarships were made available by countries of the former Soviet Union for overseas training in the publishing sector, but these dried up after 1990. Over the past decade Lao publishing practitioners have benefited from some short-term training programmes in neighbouring Việt Nam and China, but the Department of Publishing, Printing, Distribution and Libraries is keen to establish more formal partnerships with western countries involving the extension of management and technical skills and donations of new technology.
