The Lao Top Level Domain Name .la was maintained from 1996 by Singtel (Singapore), but no user registration took place until 2000, when the newly-established LANIC decided to entrust registration to the Australian company Stirling Pacific. However, for various reasons this relationship did not work out and in 2003 overseas registration was entrusted to the UK-based company GAA, with domestic registration undertaken by LANIC itself.
