Luang Prabang Radio Station was established in 1969 under the Colombo Plan for Co-operative Economic Development in Asia and the Pacific, which also upgraded the Vientiane headquarters of the former Royal Lao Radio and funded the construction of provincial radio stations in Champassak and Savannakhet Provinces. Initially only broadcast in AM on a 2.5 Kw transmitter, it recently acquired a 10 KW AM transmitter from the USA and a 300W TQT transmitter donated by Spain, and now broadcasts across the entire province on 705 KHz AM and 103.5 MHz FM. It currently broadcasts 14½ hours of news, current affairs, magazine and music programmes each day, commencing at 5am and closing down at 10pm. This includes four hours daily in ethnic minority languages (two hours of Hmong, two hours of Khmu) and 1½ hours of news relayed from Lao National Radio (LNR) in Vientiane. Most programmes are broadcast live. Luang Prabang Radio Station has more than 30 staff, including nine women.
