The Department of Intellectual Property, Standardisation and Metrology of the Science, Technology and Environment Agency (STEA) was established in 1993. It is responsible for advising the government on issues relating to intellectual property registration, including trade marks, patents, utility models (petty patents) and industrial designs, and on product quality, standards and measurement, including the preparation of suitable regulations. It manages the standardisation of quality of products (both Lao-produced and imported) and certifies equipment for measuring weights and volumes.
