Stored in the basement of the former royal palace building, the Archives of the Luang Prabang National Museum comprise two distinct sections. The first comprises over 2,000 palm leaf manuscripts which have already been inventoried through the Preservation of Lao Manuscripts Programme (PLMP) and the second several thousand royal and colonial books and documents dating back to the late 19th century, which have not yet been inventoried. The Department of Archives in Vientiane has proposed to the Luang Prabang authorities a co-operative inventory project in connection with the latter, but no start date has yet been agreed.
