Located on one of the oldest sacred sites in Luang Namtha Province, That Chieng Theum has a rounded base and an octagonal-shaped spire. It is decorated with mosaics and Buddhist symbols, with four small stupas at each corner. Local legends relate that Chieng Teum stupa was built by a young prince named Inphan, son of Lu King Savannifa of Muang San, who became guardian of Xieng Kaeng village. Historical research suggests that the stupa was built in 1796 by the Lu ethnic people; it was renovated in 1997, in which year two additional small stupas were added.
